Submerged 17th-Century 'Barbary Corsair' Shipwreck Identified off the Coast of Algiers with Intact Bronze Cannons

Marine archaeologists have located the remains of a 1680s privateer vessel buried in the deep sediment off the coast of Algiers. The wreck, identified as a heavy galley, contains a rare collection of North African naval weaponry, including six highly decorative bronze cannons and several iron sabers, offering a unique look into the maritime power of the Barbary States during the late 17th century.

The vessel's cargo includes piles of Ottoman-era ceramics and navigational instruments, suggesting the ship was engaged in a Mediterranean trade mission before it was lost. Experts believe the anoxic conditions of the silt have preserved much of the wooden hull, which may reveal previously unknown details about corsair ship construction and hybrid galley designs.
