2,400-Year-Old 'Temple of the Wine God' Dionysus with Intact Mosaic Floors Uncovered in Ancient Teos, Turkey

Excavations at the ancient city of Teos on Turkey’s Aegean coast have revealed the largest known Temple of Dionysus from the Hellenistic period. The discovery is highlighted by the recovery of nearly intact mosaic floors depicting scenes of Bacchic revelry, grapevine patterns, and theatrical masks, reflecting the god's role as the patron of the arts and wine.

The temple's architecture, designed by the famed architect Hermogenes, showcases the transition from Ionic to a more experimental decorative style. Researchers are currently using 3D scanning to reconstruct the collapsed marble architraves, which contain rare inscriptions detailing the temple's role as the headquarters for the 'Artists of Dionysus' guild.
