The Getty Museum Formally Repatriates Rare 3rd-Century BCE 'Thracian' Gold Jewelry to the Bulgarian National Museum of History

The J. Paul Getty Museum has completed the formal repatriation of a collection of 3rd-century BCE Thracian gold jewelry to Bulgaria. The artifacts, which include a finely wrought pectoral and several zoomorphic bracelets, were determined to have been illegally excavated from a burial mound in southern Bulgaria during the late 1990s. The restitution follows a multi-year collaborative investigation between the Getty and the Bulgarian Ministry of Culture.

Bulgarian officials praised the Getty for its transparency and commitment to ethical collecting practices. The Thracians were renowned for their gold-working skills, and this collection represents a pinnacle of their craftsmanship, blending local styles with Hellenistic influences. The items will be the centerpiece of a new permanent exhibition in Sofia dedicated to the 'Golden Age of Thracian Kings,' aimed at highlighting the region's importance as a crossroads of ancient civilizations.
