A new study published in History of Science and Mathematics has identified a previously overlooked section of the Apastamba Sulba Sutra that describes the construction of curved ritual surfaces. By applying modern geometric modeling to the Sanskrit verses, researchers found that the instructions define the exact curvature required for parabolic reflectors, likely used to focus light during high-precision astronomical rituals.
The study demonstrates that the Vedic mathematicians understood the reflective properties of conic sections nearly 500 years before similar concepts appeared in Hellenistic geometry. The algorithms provided in the text for the 'squaring of the curve' indicate a high degree of proficiency in iterative numerical approximations and structural optics.
