Dallas Museum of Art Formally Repatriates Rare 3rd-Century 'Gandhara' Bodhisattva Statuary to Pakistan

In a significant move for international cultural restitution, the Dallas Museum of Art has formally returned a collection of high-quality stone carvings from the ancient region of Gandhara to the government of Pakistan. The artifacts, which include a monumental 3rd-century seated Bodhisattva and several intricate friezes, were identified as having been illegally excavated and smuggled out of the Swat Valley during the mid-20th century. This repatriation follows a two-year joint investigation between US federal authorities and Pakistani heritage experts.

During the handover ceremony, museum officials emphasized their commitment to ethical provenance and the preservation of global heritage. The Gandhara civilization, known for its unique Greco-Buddhist art style, represents a vital period of cultural exchange between the East and West. The returned pieces are slated to be housed in the National Museum of Pakistan in Islamabad, where they will be featured in a new gallery dedicated to the preservation of Buddhist history in the Indus region.
