In a coastal village near Puri, historians have identified a 7th-century palm-leaf manuscript titled 'Vak-Siddhanta'. This rare work delves into the philosophy of language, specifically the relationship between sound (Shabda) and its cosmic referent (Artha). The text belongs to the Sphota school of thought but introduces a unique localized variation that emphasizes the "emotive power" of speech over its purely structural components.
The manuscript was found preserved in an airtight copper casket inside a temple foundation. Experts suggest that the 'Vak-Siddhanta' represents a missing link in the evolution of Bhartrihari's linguistic theories as they traveled toward Southeast Asia. The discovery highlights Odisha's role as a major hub for maritime philosophical exchange in the early medieval period.
