UNESCO Grants Emergency Heritage Status to the 'Traditional Voyaging Canoes of the Micronesian Atolls'

In a significant move to protect Oceanic intangible heritage, UNESCO has officially granted emergency protection status to the traditional voyaging canoe-building and navigation practices of the Micronesian atolls. This designation recognizes the ancient seafaring wisdom that allowed indigenous populations to navigate thousands of miles across the Pacific using only stars, wave patterns, and bird migrations. The decision comes as rising sea levels and climate-induced migration threaten the survival of these unique maritime communities.

The protection initiative includes the establishment of specialized cultural centers across the Marshall Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia. These centers are designed to facilitate the intergenerational transfer of knowledge regarding the construction of proa vessels using native materials such as breadfruit wood and coconut fiber. UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay stated that this designation is a critical step in ensuring that the "living libraries" of Pacific navigation are not lost to the 21st-century environmental crisis.
