The 'Lapis and Lead' Seaway: Researchers Identify 4,500-Year-Old Maritime Route Linking the Persian Gulf and East Africa

A breakthrough study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science has identified a previously unknown maritime trade network dubbed the 'Lapis and Lead' Seaway. By analyzing lead isotope signatures in beads found at sites in Oman and Tanzania, researchers have proven that direct maritime exchange existed between the Persian Gulf and the Swahili Coast as early as 2,500 BCE.

This discovery pushes back the timeline of trans-oceanic trade in the Indian Ocean by nearly a millennium. The route facilitated the exchange of semi-precious stones, copper, and lead, suggesting that prehistoric mariners possessed far more sophisticated navigational skills and vessel designs than previously assumed by traditional archaeology.
