UNESCO Inscribes the 'Industrial Salt-Glazed Pottery Landscapes of the Lower Rhine' to World Heritage List

In a landmark decision, UNESCO has formally added the historic salt-glazed pottery regions of the Lower Rhine to the World Heritage List. This transnational site, spanning the border between Germany and the Netherlands, recognizes the unique industrial heritage of pottery production that flourished in the region from the 14th to the 19th centuries.

The designation highlights the innovative kiln technologies and specific chemical glazing processes that defined European stoneware for centuries. Preservation efforts will now focus on the physical conservation of the massive historic brick kilns and the protection of the subterranean clay extraction networks that remain largely intact beneath the modern landscape.
