Excavation of Phrygian "Sun-Mirror" Sanctuary in Gordion Links the Festival of Cybele to Precise Vernal Alignments

A team from the Anatolian Archaeology Institute has announced the discovery of a monumental Phrygian "Sun-Mirror" Sanctuary within the citadel of Gordion. The structure features a series of polished bronze disks positioned to reflect the first rays of the vernal equinox onto a central altar dedicated to the goddess Cybele. This sophisticated solar alignment confirms the specific dates of the ancient Festival of the Mountain Mother, a multi-day event celebrating the rebirth of the wild.

In addition to the solar architecture, researchers found several ritual libation vessels inscribed with early Phrygian script detailing the hierarchy of participants. The discovery proves that the festival was a state-sponsored event that unified the Phrygian elite and commoners through a shared seasonal calendar and dramatic light-based spectacles.
