Intact 1st-Century Roman 'Cavalry Training Arena' with Mythological Reliefs Uncovered in Southern Albania

Archaeologists working near the ancient site of Butrint have uncovered a perfectly preserved Roman cavalry arena. The circular structure, measuring 40 meters in diameter, features a specialized sandy floor and a surrounding stone wall decorated with high-relief marble carvings depicting the legendary horses of Achilles and the labors of Hercules.

Experts believe the arena was used by elite Roman units stationed in the Balkans for tactical drills and ceremonial displays. The vivid mythological reliefs are among the most detailed found in the region, illustrating the cultural importance of equine combat and the integration of Roman military life with classical mythology during the early Imperial period.
