Archaeologists and restoration experts working on a 10th-century Nolamba dynasty temple in the Kolar district of Karnataka have uncovered a remarkable architectural feature: a series of granite sound-pipes integrated into the temple's inner sanctum walls. These hollowed stone channels, previously hidden behind layers of soot and later additions, appear to have been designed to modulate the resonance of Vedic chants and ritual bells, creating a unique acoustic environment for worshippers.
The restoration project, led by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), aims to preserve the intricate carvings of the Nolamba style, which blend elements of Pallava and Ganga architecture. This recent discovery of "acoustic engineering" suggests that ancient temple builders in the region possessed advanced knowledge of sound physics, intentionally crafting chambers to sustain specific harmonic frequencies during religious ceremonies.
