Pristine 4th-Century BCE 'Temple of Poseidon' Sanctuary with Marine-Motif Mosaics Uncovered in Ancient Corinth

Excavations at the outskirts of Ancient Corinth have revealed a previously unknown Temple of Poseidon sanctuary dating to the 4th century BCE. The highlight of the find is a sprawling floor mosaic composed of thousands of small pebbles, depicting the sea god Poseidon riding a chariot drawn by hippocamps, surrounded by an array of intricately detailed dolphins and sea creatures.

Archaeologists believe this site served as a specialized maritime shrine where sailors offered prayers before embarking on long voyages. The find includes several silver tetradrachms and bronze votive tridents, suggesting the temple enjoyed significant patronage. The discovery provides a rare look at the artistic transition from the Late Classical to the Early Hellenistic period in Greek sacred architecture, particularly in how maritime themes were integrated into religious spaces.
