UNESCO Inscribes the ‘Prehistoric Shell-Mound Landscapes of the Pearl River Delta’ to World Heritage List

In a landmark decision, UNESCO has formally designated the Prehistoric Shell-Mound Landscapes of the Pearl River Delta as a World Heritage site. These archaeological complexes, dating back over 6,000 years, provide unparalleled evidence of early maritime adaptation and complex social structures among Southeast Asia’s earliest coastal inhabitants. The site includes hundreds of artificially raised mounds composed of discarded mollusks, which served as both habitation sites and ceremonial centers.

The designation highlights the cultural resilience of the Lingnan people and their sophisticated management of estuarine resources. Conservationists hope that the World Heritage status will provide much-needed protection against rapid urban expansion in the surrounding region. The committee noted that the site offers critical data for understanding post-glacial sea-level rises and their impact on human migration patterns in the Pacific.
