Rare 8th-Century 'Rashtrakuta' Dynasty Jain Basadi with Obsidian-Inlaid Idols Discovered in Southern Maharashtra

A team of independent researchers and state archaeologists has discovered a rare 8th-century Jain Basadi in the Sangli district of Maharashtra. The temple, built during the peak of the Rashtrakuta period, is notable for its primary Tirthankara idols which are inlaid with polished obsidian, a volcanic glass material rarely documented in the region's religious statuary.

The sanctuary's architectural plan indicates a sophisticated subterranean drainage system intended to manage ritual libations without compromising the temple's structural integrity. The lintels are decorated with pristine figures of the 24 Tirthankaras, providing new insights into the spread of Jainism in the Deccan under Rashtrakuta royal patronage.
