Archaeologists Identify the ‘Soapstone and Copper’ Route Linking Ancient Zimbabwe to the Swahili Coast

Researchers have identified a previously undocumented Trade Route linking the inland citadels of the Great Zimbabwe civilization to the Swahili maritime hubs of the Indian Ocean. By analyzing the chemical signatures of soapstone artifacts and copper ingots found across East Africa, the team mapped a network of 13th-century caravanserai and mountain passes. This route facilitated the exchange of gold and ivory for Persian ceramics and Indian textiles.

The study reveals that the exchange was far more integrated than previously thought, with specialized copper-smelting villages acting as economic anchors along the way. The discovery of high-status soapstone carvings at coastal sites suggests that Zimbabwe’s artistic influence extended directly to the sea. This research redraws the map of medieval African commerce, emphasizing the continent's internal economic dynamism before European contact.
