Archaeologists utilizing a refined Uranium-Series (U-Th) dating methodology have successfully dated engraved ostrich eggshell fragments from the Thar Desert to 75,000 years ago. This new calibration achieves unprecedented precision by accounting for micro-leaching effects in arid soil environments, pushing back the timeline for symbolic expression in South Asia by over 15,000 years.
The geometric engravings on these fragments represent some of the earliest known evidence of abstract cognitive behavior in Homo sapiens outside of Africa. The research team suggests that the Thar Desert served as a critical hub for cultural innovation during the Middle Paleolithic, facilitating the spread of complex symbolic systems across the Indian subcontinent.
