Discovery of 'Turquoise-Eyed' Condor Effigies in the Colca Canyon Linked to Ancient Wari 'Sky-Greeting' Festivals

Archaeologists working in the high-altitude reaches of Peru's Colca Canyon have uncovered a series of monumental stone effigies shaped like condors, featuring rare turquoise-inlaid eyes. The discovery, dated to approximately 800 CE, suggests that the Wari Empire conducted elaborate 'Sky-Greeting' festivals designed to propitiate celestial deities during the transition from the dry season to the rains.

Excavations around the effigies revealed layers of ritual offerings, including chicha fermentation vessels and camelid remains, indicating that these sites hosted massive communal feasts. Researchers believe the condor, a symbol of the upper world, was the focal point of a processional route that drew pilgrims from across the southern highlands, cementing political and religious ties through shared ceremonial performance.
