3,000-Year-Old 'Zhou Dynasty Imperial Gem-Inlay Studio' and Unfinished Nephrite Scepters Uncovered in Shaanxi

Archaeologists in Shaanxi Province have excavated an elite artisanal quarter dating to the early Western Zhou Dynasty. The site served as an 'Imperial Gem-Inlay Studio', where master craftsmen produced ceremonial scepters and weapons for the royal family. The find includes over 500 fragments of semi-precious stones, including turquoise, malachite, and high-quality nephrite jade, along with specialized bronze micro-drills.

The highlight of the excavation is a cache of unfinished ritual scepters that show the step-by-step process of complex gemstone inlay. The presence of specialized abrasive powders and polishing stones indicates that the Zhou artisans possessed a sophisticated understanding of mineral hardness and lapidary chemistry. This workshop is the most complete of its kind ever found and reveals the immense economic and symbolic value placed on decorative arts during the early stages of Chinese imperial history.
