Discovery of a 10th-Century 'Rashtrakuta' Style Vishnu Temple with Unique 'Naga-Bandha' Friezes in Rural Bidar

In a remote village in Karnataka's Bidar district, a chance discovery by local farmers has led to the identification of a 10th-century Vishnu temple showcasing late Rashtrakuta architectural influences. The temple features a unique set of Naga-Bandha (intertwined serpent) friezes that wrap around the base of the pillars, a motif rarely seen in such complexity in northern Karnataka. The granite structure includes a spacious Sabhamandapa with intricately carved ceilings depicting the cardinal directions.

Heritage experts from the State Archaeology Department believe the temple may have been commissioned by a local chieftain serving under the Rashtrakuta monarchs. The site also contains several 'Hero Stones' (Virgal) which detail a battle fought near the temple grounds during the 11th century. A proposal has been submitted to declare the area a protected monument to prevent illegal encroachment and ensure the preservation of the unique carvings.
