Underwater archaeological surveys in the eastern Mediterranean have uncovered a previously unknown maritime network dubbed the "Bitumen and Cinnabar Link." Researchers identified a series of 5,000-year-old shipwrecks containing distinct Levant bitumen and Anatolian mercury ores, suggesting a highly organized exchange between the Dead Sea region and the Taurus Mountains.
This discovery challenges previous assumptions about the scale of Early Bronze Age maritime logistics. The presence of specialized storage vessels indicates that ancient mariners were transporting hazardous materials over long distances to supply the burgeoning metallurgical industries of the ancient Near East.
