Intact 19th-Dynasty 'Master of the Royal Charioteers' Tomb Uncovered in Saqqara with Rare Leather Harnesses

Archaeologists at the Saqqara necropolis have unveiled a pristine tomb belonging to a high-ranking military official titled the "Master of the Royal Charioteers" from the 19th Dynasty. The excavation revealed remarkably well-preserved organic materials, most notably a set of embossed leather harnesses and bronze bit attachments, providing unprecedented insight into the maintenance and decoration of pharaonic military equipment during the New Kingdom.

The burial chamber also contains vibrant wall reliefs depicting the official leading a procession of chariots before King Ramesses II. Experts believe the tomb's location and the quality of the grave goods indicate the vital role the chariot corps played in the social hierarchy of the era. Alongside the military gear, the mission discovered a set of alabaster canopic jars and a collection of votive figurines dedicated to the god Ptah-Sokar-Osiris.
