Archaeologists in Madhya Pradesh have uncovered the ruins of a 9th-century Sun Temple belonging to the Chandela dynasty in the remote Damoh district. The most striking feature of the discovery is the presence of solar-focusing rock crystals embedded in the ceiling of the inner sanctum. These crystals were designed to direct a concentrated beam of light onto the main idol's forehead during the equinoxes, demonstrating the advanced optical knowledge of the temple architects.
The temple's exterior is adorned with intricate carvings of celestial dancers, warriors, and solar chariots, typical of the early Chandela style but with local stylistic variations. Local authorities and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) have initiated a site protection plan to prevent encroachment and to begin the systematic documentation of the numerous stone inscriptions found within the temple courtyard.
