Advanced LiDAR technology has mapped a previously unknown 9th-century temple complex deep within the dense rainforests of South Sumatra. The site is attributed to the Srivijaya Empire and consists of several brick stupas and a central ceremonial courtyard.
Ground teams investigating the site discovered two massive bronze bells decorated with maritime motifs, suggesting the temple served as a sanctuary for sailors and traders. This find confirms the deep reach of Buddhist maritime influence across the Indonesian archipelago during the early medieval period.
