Researchers using advanced underwater LiDAR have mapped a massive megalithic avenue submerged 15 meters below the surface of the Black Sea. The site, located off the Bulgarian coast, consists of two parallel rows of standing stones stretching for over 500 meters, leading toward a central circular platform. This structure was part of a sprawling coastal settlement that was inundated when sea levels rose approximately 7,000 years ago.
The mapping reveals that the avenue was aligned with the winter solstice sunrise, suggesting that the Neolithic inhabitants possessed a sophisticated understanding of solar cycles and monumental architecture long before the construction of similar sites in Western Europe. This discovery provides critical new data on the maritime cultures of the Black Sea and their role in spreading megalithic traditions into the Mediterranean and beyond.
