A previously unknown sanctuary dedicated to Themis, the goddess of divine law, has been identified in a mountainous region of Aetolia. The temple, built in the classic Doric order, features a unique double-chambered naos. Excavators discovered a cache of marble offerings, including a small-scale replica of a balance scale and several inscribed bronze tablets containing local judicial oaths.
This discovery is particularly significant because sanctuaries dedicated specifically to Themis are rare in the Greek world, usually being associated with larger complexes for Zeus or Apollo. The site's location on a high ridge suggests it functioned as a border sanctuary where neighboring city-states could meet on neutral, sacred ground to resolve territorial conflicts under the goddess's watchful eye.
