UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional Terraced Date-Palm Oases of the Figuig Region' to the World Heritage List

UNESCO has formally recognized the Figuig Oases in eastern Morocco as a World Heritage site, citing their unique millennia-old hydraulic management systems and architectural cohesion. The site encompasses seven distinct fortified districts (ksour) that have preserved a delicate ecological balance between the Saharan climate and the high-altitude Atlas foothills, showcasing a living cultural landscape that has adapted to arid conditions for over 1,000 years.

The designation highlights the 'foggara' irrigation technique, a complex network of gravity-fed subterranean channels that sustain thousands of date palms and communal garden plots. UNESCO officials noted that the Figuig region serves as a critical repository of intangible heritage, including ancient agricultural calendars and community-led water distribution laws that are still practiced today. This inscription is expected to bolster conservation efforts and promote sustainable heritage tourism in the region.
