UNESCO Designates the 'Subterranean Medieval Cisterns of the Cycladic Islands' as World Heritage for Historical Climate Resilience

UNESCO has added a network of medieval subterranean cisterns across the Cycladic archipelago to the World Heritage List, emphasizing their role as models for sustainable water management. These stone-vaulted structures, many dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries, were designed to capture and store every drop of winter rainfall in one of the Mediterranean's most arid environments.

The designation covers over 100 sites on islands like Amorgos and Sifnos, where the cisterns remain remarkably intact. UNESCO experts highlighted that these ancient systems are not merely historical curiosities but provide blueprints for decentralized water security in the face of modern climate change. The inclusion on the list will provide funding for the restoration of these cisterns to functional status, allowing local communities to once again utilize traditional methods to combat seasonal droughts.
