A groundbreaking survey in the Scottish Borders has identified a large, circular ritual plaza dating to the Bell Beaker period. The site features a series of standing stones and post-holes that researchers believe were used to track the lunar cycle, specifically the "lunar standstill" events, indicating a sophisticated understanding of celestial movements by early Bronze Age communities.
Excavations at the center of the plaza revealed a cache of decorated pottery and copper daggers, likely left as votive offerings during seasonal ceremonies. This discovery provides crucial evidence for the continuity of megalithic traditions in Scotland and suggests that the Bell Beaker people integrated their own culture with existing Neolithic astronomical practices.
