UNESCO Grants 'Blue Shield' Protection to the Ancient 'Mud-Brick Citadels of the Atacama Desert' to Combat Wind Erosion

To protect some of the world's most fragile architectural heritage, UNESCO has granted emergency 'Blue Shield' status to the mud-brick citadels of the Atacama Desert in Chile. These structures, dating to the pre-Inca Atacameño culture, are facing unprecedented threats from increasing wind speeds and shifting sand dunes caused by local climate shifts. The new designation provides funding for innovative chemical stabilizers and the construction of high-tech windbreaks.

Conservationists are deploying nanoparticle-based sprays to reinforce the sun-dried bricks without altering their breathability. This initiative is part of a global effort to safeguard earthen architecture in arid zones, which often lack the visibility of stone monuments but contain vital records of early urban life. The UNESCO team will also work with local communities to integrate traditional mud-plastering techniques with modern structural monitoring sensors.
