Discovery of 'Silver-Threaded' Lotus Offerings in Mekong Delta Reveals 1,800-Year-Old Roots of Funan Water-Blessing Festivals

Researchers in the Mekong Delta have discovered remarkably preserved organic remains of lotus flowers wrapped in fine silver thread. These artifacts were found within a submerged ceremonial complex associated with the Funan Culture, dating to the 2nd century AD. The discovery suggests that modern water-blessing traditions in Southeast Asia have roots extending back nearly two millennia.

The silver-wrapped lotuses are thought to have been cast into the river as part of a seasonal festival to ensure the fertility of the floodplains. Analysis of the surrounding sediment indicates that these offerings were made during the transition from the dry to the wet season, aligning perfectly with the timing of contemporary regional water festivals.
