50,000-Year-Old 'Abstract Textile Patterns' Discovered in Remote Altai Mountain Cave Challenge Early Human Cognition

Archaeologists exploring a deep limestone cavern in the Altai Mountains have discovered abstract rock art depicting intricate weaving and textile patterns dating back 50,000 years. The engravings, created with fine stone tools, show cross-hatched designs and interlocking loops that closely resemble advanced fiber technology, predating the earliest known physical textiles by nearly 20,000 years.

The discovery suggests that early humans in Central Asia possessed complex spatial reasoning and were experimenting with decorative arts inspired by weaving much earlier than previously thought. The site also yielded several bone awls and needles, confirming that the inhabitants were proficient in skin and fiber working during the Late Pleistocene.
