Discovery of a 3,000-Year-Old 'Shang Dynasty' Royal Chariot-Racing Arena and Gilded Wheel-Tracks in Henan

In a major breakthrough for Chinese archaeology, researchers in Henan Province have uncovered the remains of a massive ceremonial chariot-racing arena dating to the late Shang Dynasty. The site features a large, oval-shaped track with hardened earthen surfaces that still bear the distinct impressions of gilded wheel rims used during royal festivals.

The arena is flanked by tiered stone platforms, likely intended for elite spectators, and a ritual sacrifice pit containing the remains of several high-performance horses and bronze chariot fittings. Scholars believe the site was used for more than just sport, serving as a critical venue for displaying military prowess and reinforcing the divine authority of the Shang kings.
