A joint mission of Egyptian and European archaeologists has uncovered the remains of a Ptolemaic-era Temple of the Sacred Falcon in the Mons Smaragdus region. Built during the 3rd century BCE, the temple served the miners of the nearby ancient emerald deposits. The structure features a small courtyard leading to a sanctuary where several mummified falcons were found, still wearing miniature bronze crowns.
The temple's inscriptions reveal a syncretic worship of Horus and local desert deities, believed to protect the miners from the harsh environment. This discovery is significant as it provides the first architectural evidence of organized religious life in this historically isolated mining district, highlighting the lengths to which the Ptolemaic state went to secure its gemstone resources.
