A major breakthrough in the study of the Caral-Supe civilization has occurred with the discovery of the Temple of the Cosmic Spiral. Located on a high plateau overlooking the Supe Valley, this ceremonial center predates most known complex architecture in the Americas. The temple features a massive circular sunken court connected to a central platform by a series of precisely aligned ramps.
The most striking feature is a large geoglyphic mural on the temple’s floor, created using multi-colored stones. The mural depicts a massive spiral that researchers believe was used for astronomical observations related to the agricultural cycle. Unlike the coastal temples of the later Moche or Chavin, this site shows no signs of sacrificial activity, suggesting a focus on celestial observation and communal ritual.
