Scholars have recently translated a series of 9th-century granite inscriptions found in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh. Titled "Atma-Darshana," the inscriptions present a rare, early medieval discourse on the Philosophy of Self-Reflectivity, exploring the nature of the "witness-consciousness" (Sakshi-Chaitanya) in everyday action.
Unlike purely theological texts, the Atma-Darshana inscriptions provide a psychological manual for ethical living, arguing that moral clarity is a byproduct of mental transparency. The text suggests that by observing one's own thoughts as "external objects," an individual can achieve a state of Equanimous Agency, allowing for more virtuous interactions with others.
