Sunken 2,400-Year-Old 'Classical Greek' Merchant Vessel with Intact Cargo of Chian Wine Discovered off the Coast of Cyprus

A team of underwater archaeologists using deep-sea ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) has located a remarkably well-preserved merchant ship from the 4th century BCE. The vessel, found at a depth of 300 meters off the coast of Cyprus, remains nearly intact, including its primary cargo of hundreds of pointed amphorae used to transport Chian wine.

Early analysis suggests the ship was traveling along major Mediterranean trade routes before it succumbed to a storm. The preservation of the wooden hull and the presence of lead-weighted anchors provide a rare opportunity to study Classical Greek shipbuilding techniques and the logistics of ancient maritime commerce.
