UNESCO Inscribes the 'Traditional High-Altitude Bee-Keeping Landscapes of the Altai' as World Heritage

During its spring session, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee officially inscribed the 'Traditional High-Altitude Bee-Keeping Landscapes of the Altai Mountains' to the World Heritage List. This designation recognizes the millennia-old relationship between nomadic communities and the native Altai honeybee, which has survived in the region's extreme climate.

The site includes unique 'log-hive' architectures, known locally as borti, and the seasonal migration routes used by beekeepers to follow alpine floral blooms. The committee highlighted the site for its 'outstanding universal value' in maintaining both biological diversity and traditional ecological knowledge in the face of modern industrial pressure.

Preservation efforts will now focus on protecting the surrounding meadow ecosystems from encroachment. This inscription is seen as a major victory for indigenous Altai communities who have lobbied for international recognition of their unique cultural-natural heritage for over a decade.
