17th-Century ‘Sovereign’s Ransom’ Shipwreck Identified in Hudson Bay with Cargo of Arctic Furs and French Gold

Marine archaeologists have positively identified the wreckage of the Souverain, a French merchant vessel that vanished in 1684, on the floor of the Hudson Bay. The ship, dubbed the ‘Sovereign’s Ransom,’ was found in remarkably cold, anoxic waters that preserved its structural integrity. Diver teams have already sighted a significant cargo of compressed Arctic fox furs and several iron-bound chests containing French gold Louis d'or coins, intended for trade with indigenous populations.

This find is being hailed as a milestone in North American maritime history, as it sheds light on the fierce 17th-century competition for the Arctic fur trade. Preliminary scans show that the ship’s lower hold remains sealed, potentially containing rare botanical samples and navigational instruments from the era. The presence of the gold suggests a diplomatic or high-stakes commercial mission that was previously unrecorded in the colonial archives of the Compagnie du Nord.
