Construction work in rural Romania has led to the accidental discovery of a pristine 2nd-century Roman cavalry garrison. The site was remarkably well-preserved by a sudden landslide shortly after abandonment, leaving behind an unprecedented collection of wooden training gear, including practice swords and leather-covered shields used for drills.
Archaeologists are calling it a 'time capsule' of Roman military life on the Danubian frontier. The garrison includes an intact stable block with organic flooring still in place and a small sanctuary dedicated to Epona, the goddess of horses, which contained several rare bronze votive offerings and horse-trappings.
