UNESCO Inscribes the 'Ancient Salt-Pan Landscapes of the Guérande Peninsula' to the World Heritage List

In a ceremony held today, UNESCO has formally recognized the Guérande Peninsula in France for its unique cultural and industrial landscape. These salt marshes have been harvested using traditional methods since the Iron Age, representing one of the few places in Europe where medieval salt-working techniques remain in active use.

The designation highlights the interplay between human engineering and biodiversity, as the pans support a wide array of migratory bird species. Preservation efforts will now focus on protecting the site from rising sea levels and ensuring the transmission of the 'Paludier' salt-worker guild's ancestral knowledge to future generations.
