Extensive Restoration of 10th-Century 'Guhila' Dynasty Shiva Temple in Rajasthan Reveals Hidden Underground Ritual Vaults

A major conservation project led by the Rajasthan State Archaeology Department at a 10th-century Guhila dynasty temple has led to the discovery of hidden subterranean vaults beneath the main mandapa. These vaults contain a series of ritual bronze objects, including a multi-headed lamp and several ceremonial vessels, which appear to have been ritually interred during a period of regional conflict.

The restoration also focused on the temple’s exterior, removing layers of later-period lime plaster to reveal exquisite carvings of the Saptamatrikas (Seven Mothers) and intricate geometric friezes. The Guhila rulers, ancestors of the Ranas of Mewar, are known for their early patronage of Shaivism, and this site provides rare architectural evidence of their early structural temple-building techniques in the Marwar-Mewar borderland.
