Archaeologists in Bolivia have completed the excavation of a new ritual platform at the Tiwanaku site, dubbed the 'Gateway of the Stars.' The structure features a precise astronomical alignment that allowed a beam of sunlight to illuminate a central monolith only during the sunrise of the April equinox. Surrounding the platform, researchers discovered thousands of ceramic fragments from high-status drinking vessels, indicating that the celestial event was the centerpiece of a massive communal festival.
The team also identified remnants of fermented maize (chicha) and dried llama meat, confirming the scale of the feasting that took place. This discovery underscores the importance of astronomical precision in the cultural heritage of the Andes, demonstrating that Tiwanaku was a major pilgrimage destination for seasonal rites that synchronized the agricultural cycle with the movements of the cosmos.
