National Museum of World Cultures in the Netherlands Repatriates Sacred 18th-Century 'Yoruba' Divination Trays to Nigeria

The National Museum of World Cultures (NMVW) in the Netherlands has finalized the repatriation of three sacred 18th-century Opon Ifa, or Yoruba divination trays, to Nigeria. These intricately carved wooden artifacts were identified as part of a group of items removed during colonial expeditions in the early 20th century. The return ceremony took place in Lagos, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing restitution dialogue between European institutions and West African nations.

The trays are renowned for their artistic merit, featuring relief carvings of the deity Esu and symbolic animals. Nigerian heritage officials noted that these objects are not merely museum pieces but active liturgical instruments vital for the practice of Ifa traditional religion. The artifacts will be housed in the National Museum Lagos until the completion of a new dedicated wing for returned cultural treasures.
