Intact 12th-Dynasty 'Overseer of the Royal Granite-Quarries' Tomb Uncovered in Aswan with Rare Red-Beryl Inlays

A joint Egyptian-German archaeological mission in the Elephantine region of Aswan has revealed the unlooted tomb of an elite official named Amenemhat-Sen, who served as the Overseer of the Royal Granite-Quarries during the 12th Dynasty. The tomb's interior is notable for its vibrant polychrome reliefs depicting the technical process of extracting and transporting massive obelisks and statues down the Nile, providing new insights into Middle Kingdom engineering.

The most striking discovery within the funerary chamber is a ceremonial scepter and a series of burial masks featuring rare red-beryl inlays, a mineral rarely documented in Egyptian jewelry of this period. Researchers believe the tomb's location near the quarries was a strategic honor, reflecting the official's vital role in supplying the stone required for the pharaoh's monumental building projects in Thebes and Lisht.
