UNESCO has officially added the Acequias—the thousand-year-old irrigation channels of Spain's Sierra Nevada—to the World Heritage List. These systems, dating back to the Islamic period, are celebrated as a masterclass in climate-resilient engineering, allowing communities to farm in semi-arid high altitudes by diverting snowmelt through a complex network of gravity-fed canals.
The designation highlights the cultural continuity of the acequieros (water masters) who have maintained these systems for centuries. This move is expected to bolster conservation efforts as the region faces increasing water scarcity due to modern climate shifts, positioning the ancient infrastructure as a vital model for sustainable water management in the 21st century.
