New archaeoastronomical research has established a precise link between the Taittiriya Samhita ritual texts and a specific celestial event. Using high-resolution sky simulations, scholars have determined that the ritual layers described in the text correspond to a rare lunar occultation of the star Aldebaran (Rohini) that occurred in 1750 BCE.
This correlation suggests that the Vedic authors were recording direct, real-time astronomical observations with high fidelity. The study, published in Ancient Astronomy Today, argues that the astronomical data embedded in Vedic literature can serve as a chronological anchor, providing a scientific basis for dating the development of early Indian ritual and scientific thought during the transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age.
