Fossil of a 240-Million-Year-Old 'Chinese Dragon' Species Identified from Triassic Marine Beds in Guizhou

Paleontologists have unveiled the most complete skeleton ever found of Dinocephalosaurus orientalis, a 240-million-year-old marine reptile. The species, often compared to the mythological 'Chinese Dragon' due to its exceptionally long, snake-like neck, was discovered in Triassic-era sediment in China's Guizhou Province. The fossilized remains show the creature in a coiled posture, preserved with remarkable clarity.

The specimen features 32 separate neck vertebrae, making it one of the most anatomically unique aquatic predators of its time. Researchers note that the long neck likely allowed the creature to sneak up on schools of fish in murky waters without being detected. This find represents a major breakthrough in understanding the diversification of marine reptiles before the rise of the dinosaurs.
