The Art Institute of Chicago Repatriates 2nd-Century 'Kushan' Dynasty Stone Friezes to the National Museum of Pakistan

The Art Institute of Chicago has completed the formal repatriation of two rare schist stone friezes from the Kushan Empire to the National Museum of Pakistan. The artifacts, which depict scenes from the life of the Buddha in the distinct Gandharan style, were identified as having been illegally removed from an archaeological site in the Swat Valley during the mid-20th century. The return is the result of a multi-year provenance research project conducted by the museum in collaboration with Pakistani authorities.

Officials at the National Museum of Pakistan praised the return as a victory for cultural diplomacy. The friezes are considered significant for their unique blend of Hellenistic and South Asian artistic elements, a hallmark of the Kushan period's cosmopolitanism. The objects will be featured in a new permanent gallery dedicated to the Buddhist heritage of the Indus region, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in combatting the illicit trade of antiquities.
