1,200-Year-Old 'Wari Empire' Elite Burial Uncovered in Peru's Ayacucho Valley with Intact Feathered Textiles

Archaeologists working at the Wari heartland site of Huari in the Ayacucho Valley have discovered the unlooted tomb of an elite noblewoman, likely a priestess or local ruler. The burial chamber, located ten meters underground, contained the individual in a seated position wrapped in layers of exquisite textiles. The outer shroud is decorated with a vibrant mosaic of hundreds of thousands of individual bird feathers, depicting stylized feline and bird-of-prey deities.

Alongside the mummy were silver ornaments, spondylus shell beads, and ceremonial ceramics containing residue of chicha (maize beer). Lead researcher Dr. Patricia Quiñónez emphasized that the preservation of the feathered garment is unprecedented, offering a vivid look at the artistic sophistication and wealth of the Wari Empire long before the rise of the Inca.
